ʻŌPIO INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

About the Program

In 2023, we created HIDOE-credited STEM internships for Kealakehe High School, supporting 8 interns and 3 industry partner host sites. All interns reported that they valued the experience of working in a professional setting, participating in teamwork, and receiving mentorship from their supervisors. Following the pilot program, 38 Kealakehe students signed up for future internship opportunities, and 35 new industry partners registered their interest in hosting Kealakehe High interns, proving the desire for more work-based learning opportunities.

By 2024, our ʻŌpio Internship Program grew to include West Hawaiʻi Explorations Academy (WHEA) students, and secured funding for sustained mentorship within 120-hour internships.
