HOW TO APPLY

  1. Explore Opportunities: Review the available internships below and choose one that aligns with your career goals and program of study.

  2. Prepare Your Materials: Make sure you have an updated resume and a tailored cover letter ready to submit with your application.

  3. Fill Out the Application: Complete the application form, ensuring all required fields are filled out.

  4. Submit Your Application: Attach your resume and cover letter, and submit everything by the application deadline.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the ʻŌpio Internship Program, students must meet the following requirements:

  • Age Requirement: Students must be 16 years or older.

  • School Enrollment: Students must be currently enrolled at one of our participating schools, which include Kealakehe High School and West Hawaiʻi Explorations Academy.

  • CTE Pathway Courses: Students must have successfully completed a minimum of two courses in their chosen Career and Technical Education (CTE) pathway.

These criteria ensure that students are adequately prepared and committed to benefiting from the internship experience.

Important Dates

The ʻŌpio Internship Program follows a structured timeline to ensure a smooth application and onboarding experience for our participants and industry partners. 

  • September 9: Applications due

  • September 16-25: Interviews with host sites

  • September 30: Acceptance/placement announcements

  • October 2: HIDOE paperwork due

  • October 7-11: Onboarding and start of internship

Please note that certain internship opportunities are available based on school and program eligibility. Kealakehe High School students qualify for all 60-hour internship opportunities, while West Hawaiʻi Explorations Academy students are eligible for both 60-hour and 120-hour opportunities. Be sure to review the specific requirements for each internship to find the best fit for your career goals.

    • Arts Summit Intern with Hawaiʻi Keiki Museum offering a hands-on experience in event planning and execution, working closely with artists and performers.

    • Exhibit Intern with Hawaiʻi Keiki Museum involving design, setup, and installation of hands-on exhibits. Opportunities to propose creative ideas for new exhibits.

    • Marketing and Events Intern with NELHA providing experience in marketing, content creation, and event planning within the energy and ocean-related sectors.

    • Marketing and Communications Intern with Hawaiʻi Keiki Museum focusing on promoting the museum’s programs, events, and exhibits through marketing strategies and content creation.

    • Marketing and Events Intern with NELHA providing experience in planning and executing marketing campaigns and events within the energy and ocean-related sectors.

    • Marketing and Communications Intern with Hawaiʻi Keiki Museum offering hands-on experience in content creation, community engagement, and strategic communication.

    • Quality Assurance Intern with Symbrosia provides insight into the technological aspects of quality control in product development.

  • Quality Assurance Intern with Symbrosia contributes to the development and refinement of innovative solutions by ensuring product quality through precision laboratory procedures and equipment maintenance.

    • Kei Kai Ola ʻŌpio Internship Program with The Marine Mammal Center provides work-based marine conservation learning offering exposure to roles in animal systems and conservation within the West Hawaiʻi community.

    • Seed Bank Intern with the Hawaii Island Seed Bank focuses on preserving biodiversity through seed banking, integrating indigenous knowledge, and supporting environmental and agricultural conservation efforts.

  • Planning Department Intern with County of Hawaiʻi provides hands-on experience in collaboration and teamwork within a public service setting.

Resume, cover letter, and interview prep

The PAPA (Passion and Purpose Academy) portal is an online academy developed by Vibrant Hawai'i to give learners of all ages the chance and the choice to engage with different courses from their personal devices.

To access PAPA, create an account. When you log in, navigate to the Art of Interviews course which includes information on resumes, cover letters, and interviews. PAPA offers video recordings as well as PDFs (under the transcript section) for quick access to the course content in the form of a cheat sheet.
